Can Dogs Eat Tuna?

Many people wonder whether dogs should or shouldn't eat certain foods, such as fresh tuna or canned tuna.

Dogs can eat almost any type of food, including of course tuna, whether fresh or canned. This type of fish will give them plenty of top-quality protein, vitamins and minerals, as well as beneficial fatty oils like Omega.

Dogs can generally eat tuna, although as with everything, the amount is the secret to it sitting well and them getting all the nutrients, or it upsetting them and causing intestinal problems such as diarrhea.

How to Give Tuna to a Dog?

The first thing we should know is which type of tuna is most recommended for our dog. Our dog can eat fresh, boneless tuna lightly cooked, pan-seared with a bit of olive oil or boiled in water, whichever we prefer.

Our dog can also eat canned tuna. Though we should make sure the tuna is preserved in olive oil, sunflower oil, or that it's tuna in water.

However, we should never give our dog fresh tuna with bones, since these could get stuck in its mouth or throat, and we also shouldn't use canned tuna in brine or other substances not mentioned above.

The best way to give tuna to a dog is by adding it to its daily food — we can open a can of tuna in oil and completely drain the oil, and once the tuna is clean (with barely any oil left), we can pour it over its kibble or food.

For a dog around fifteen or twenty kilos, we can use a whole small can, a couple of times a week for example. A larger dog can have a bit more, a small dog a bit less — it's all about testing, and if we see it upsets it a bit and causes diarrhea, we simply need to calculate a smaller amount next time.

If the tuna is fresh, we should estimate an amount roughly similar to the size of a canned tuna, or if the dog is large, we can prepare a portion similar to what an adult human would eat. Fresh tuna can be mixed with the dog's usual food or given separately.
