A dense undercoat creates an air pocket that helps minimize body heat loss. Breeds native to latitudes above 45°, like Siberia, Alaska, or the Swiss Alps, have also developed efficient thermoregulatory metabolisms and a compact body shape that reduces surface area exposed to wind.

A moderate body size can favor heat retention, since it combines enough mass to generate internal heat with the agility to avoid cooling from staying still. Interestingly, the breeds most sensitive to cold tend to be those with a fine or single-layer coat, slender body proportions, and origins in warm climates, like Galgos — one of the Spanish breeds — or Chihuahuas, which lack the genetic adaptations needed to maintain their temperature in freezing environments.

Nordic working breeds tend to show remarkable cold tolerance during physical activity. Not only do they withstand extreme temperatures, but their performance actually improves in cold environments, since their bodies are built to dissipate the excess heat generated during intense effort.

Siberian Husky

Native to northeastern Siberia, the Siberian Husky has a dense coat with a woolly undercoat that forms an impenetrable barrier against wind and snow. Its body structure of 20-27 kg and moderately long legs let it move efficiently over snowy terrain without moisture building up on its extremities. The breed standard requires a coat texture that's medium — neither too coarse nor too silky — ensuring a balance between protection and self-cleaning.

Its cold resistance is remarkable, able to work pulling a sled for hours in below-freezing temperatures thanks to a metabolism that optimizes the use of fat as fuel in low-temperature conditions. This breed shows that cold adaptation doesn't rely solely on passive insulation, but also on the ability to generate heat through sustained activity. In fact, among Nordic breeds, the Husky stands out for its thermoregulatory efficiency during prolonged exercise.

To keep its coat in optimal condition, brushing should be done at least twice a week with a long-pin rake that reaches down to the base of the undercoat. During seasonal shedding, brushing intensity should increase to prevent dead coat from reducing its insulating capacity.

Alaskan Malamute

The Alaskan Malamute, one of the American breeds, developed by the Mahlemut people in Arctic regions, has a sturdy build of 34-39 kg and a thick coat with an oily undercoat that effectively repels moisture. Unlike the Husky, its build is more solid and its legs shorter, minimizing heat loss from contact with icy surfaces. The undercoat can become very dense in winter, creating superior insulation even in damp conditions.

Its tolerance to extreme cold is partly due to a peripheral vasoconstriction mechanism that reduces blood flow to the skin and extremities, concentrating heat in the vital organs during periods of inactivity. This adaptation lets it sleep on snow without suffering hypothermia, as long as it has shelter from direct wind.

Coat care requires special attention during seasonal changes, when heavy shedding can create tangles that compromise skin ventilation. An undercoat rake is recommended to remove dead undercoat without damaging the outer layer.

Samoyed

The Samoyed, bred by the nomadic Samoyed people in Siberia, has a pure white coat that acts as thermal insulation and reflects solar radiation in snowy environments. Its double coat has a unique feature: the guard hairs have a semi-transparent structure creating a fiber-optic-like effect, trapping heat while maintaining a bright appearance. The undercoat is exceptionally dense and soft-textured, with a uniform length exceeding 3 cm across the entire body.

The Samoyed's anatomy includes small, thick ears, a tail that curls over the back during rest to protect the nose from the cold, and paws covered in hair between the toes that prevent ice buildup. These traits let it sleep outdoors in below-freezing temperatures without needing artificial shelter.

Its coat needs daily brushing during shedding periods to prevent matting, since the dense undercoat tends to compact. Bathing should be limited to strictly necessary situations to preserve the natural oils that waterproof the coat.

Akita Inu

Coming from Japan's mountainous regions, the Akita Inu developed a dense coat adapted to its native climate. Unlike Nordic breeds, its cold adaptation includes an extra layer of subcutaneous fat that acts as an energy reserve and passive thermal insulator. Weighing between 30-40 kg, its compact body and moderately short legs reduce the surface exposed to cold.

The Akita's coat shows notable seasonal variation: in winter it develops such a dense undercoat that it almost hides the outer layer, while in summer it sheds down to a thin coat that allows for thermoregulation in mild climates. This phenotypic flexibility shows how breeds adapted to intense cold also need mechanisms to avoid overheating in warm seasons.

Coat care should adapt to these seasonal cycles, increasing brushing frequency during spring shedding to help remove the winter undercoat. Shaving should be avoided at any time of year, since it would destroy the natural thermal regulation mechanism.

Saint Bernard

Native to the Swiss Alps, the Saint Bernard combines a massive size of 64-82 kg with a double coat that can be short or long, but always with a dense, woolly undercoat. Its body mass lets it generate and retain large amounts of metabolic heat, while its skin thickness — up to 3 mm in some areas — contributes to passive insulation. Its wide, fur-covered paws act as natural snowshoes, distributing weight and preventing it from sinking into soft surfaces.

A less visible but crucial adaptation is that its circulatory system has features that help regulate blood flow in cold conditions. This trait lets it work as a high-mountain rescue dog for hours without suffering frostbite.

Given its size and coat density, it needs thorough brushing sessions with professional tools like a rotating-pin rake. Cleaning between the toes after walks is essential to remove ice or salt buildup that could cause irritation.

Chow Chow

This dog comes from Mongolia and northern China, and it shows in every inch of its body. The Chow Chow developed on the continent's coldest steppes, and its physical build reflects exactly that. The coat is extremely dense, with a texture that traps air and creates a hard-to-beat insulating barrier. The woolly, tightly packed undercoat makes it very difficult for moisture to reach the skin. Weighing between 20 and 32 kg, with a square build and a surface-to-volume ratio favorable for heat retention. It all fits together.

The blue tongue is the first thing that throws off anyone seeing it for the first time. Its role in thermoregulation is still debated among animal behaviorists, and those who do link it to cold-related metabolic adaptations are still working to confirm it. Worth noting, since it's sometimes presented as an established fact, and it's not entirely. What works without question is the mane covering its neck, and its small, rounded ears, which reduce heat loss in the areas where it matters most.

Keeping that coat in good shape takes some effort. The base of the coat tends to tangle, and if left unattended, the knots end up becoming a real problem, both for the dog and for whoever's trying to fix them. After bathing, it's a good idea to apply a conditioner specific to this coat type, which keeps the hair's elasticity and prevents breakage while brushing.

Newfoundland

Coming from the Canadian island of Newfoundland, this breed developed an exceptional waterproof coat with an oily outer layer and a dense undercoat that lets it work in icy waters without suffering hypothermia. Its weight of 50-68 kg and powerful muscles generate enough metabolic heat to maintain body temperature even after prolonged swims. The webbing between its toes improves swimming but also reduces the surface exposed to cold ground.

The Newfoundland's cold tolerance includes a unique cardiovascular adaptation: its heart is able to quickly redirect blood flow from the extremities to vital organs when it detects sudden temperature drops. This ability lets it recover quickly after exposure to freezing water.

Coat care should include thorough drying after water exposure, to prevent residual moisture in the undercoat from reducing its insulating capacity. Brushing should be done against the direction of hair growth to ensure full ventilation at the base of the coat.

Choosing a cold-resistant breed should factor in both the genetic adaptations and the maintenance commitment required by its specialized coat; consulting a professional about each individual's specific needs based on weight (optimal between 20-40 kg), undercoat density (requiring at least 2-3 cm for effective protection), and capacity for active work at -10°C will help ensure its wellbeing in cold climates.
