Differences Between the German Shepherd and the Swiss Shepherd

Shepherd breeds share a lot of similarities in size, appearance, and character. Even so, there are clear differences between the German Shepherd and the Swiss Shepherd that will let you tell them apart at a glance.

And not just because of coat color — the Swiss Shepherd is entirely white, while the German Shepherd is mostly black and tan (brown). Other physical differences will also help us tell them apart clearly.

Physical Characteristics of the German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is a medium-sized, sturdy dog with well-proportioned, strong muscles. Males stand between 60 and 65 cm, while females reach between 55 and 60 cm at the withers.

The German Shepherd's eyes are almond-shaped and usually dark, as is its nose. The ears are straight and pointed, while the muzzle is elongated.

This dog can have a long or short coat. As for color, you probably already know the most popular combination, called "sable" — a blend of black with reddish areas. However, there are also black, white, and black-and-white German Shepherds, the latter seen in the "panda" Shepherd.

Physical Characteristics of the Swiss Shepherd

The White Swiss Shepherd and the German Shepherd share some similarities: both are medium-sized dogs with pointed ears and a long muzzle, and their coats can be long or short.

As for differences, the Swiss Shepherd's size range is a bit different: males stand between 58 and 66 cm at the withers, while females reach 53 to 61 cm. So male German Shepherds are larger, but Swiss Shepherd females can be larger than German Shepherd females.

Another difference from the German is the shape of the back: the Swiss Shepherd's is straight, while the German Shepherd's body has a slight slope near the croup.

As for the eyes, the Swiss Shepherd's are also almond-shaped, but the iris comes in various shades of brown, rimmed by black-edged eyelids.

Although coat length is similar between the two dogs, the Swiss Shepherd's coat is always white. The coat is double-layered and, in some cases, wavy at the tips.

Character and Personality of the German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is a protective, loyal dog. Thanks to its intelligence, it's able to make decisions in tense moments and has a natural tendency to please its owners. It's also brave, attentive, and makes an excellent guard dog.

This breed is very active and needs frequent physical exercise to stay healthy and happy. It thrives with training based on obedience and positive reinforcement.

Thanks to all these traits, the German Shepherd has been trained for decades to serve as a working dog.

Character and Personality of the White Swiss Shepherd

There are few differences between the German Shepherd and the Swiss Shepherd when it comes to personality. The Swiss Shepherd is also active, protective, and loyal to its family. It develops deep devotion toward its owners and tries hard to please them.

It also shares the German Shepherd's love of physical exercise and outdoor activities, which means it needs daily walks and play. The Swiss Shepherd is also easy to train, standing out for its intelligence and its ability to learn commands very quickly.

The most notable difference in character between the two dogs is that the Swiss Shepherd, despite its friendly tendencies, is usually wary of strangers. Because of this, it's not as effective at making decisions in new or tense situations.
