How to Care for a Spanish Water Dog Puppy

What Care Does a Water Dog Puppy Need?

Strange as it may seem, since they don't look it at first glance, the Spanish Water Dog breed is highly athletic, hiding a muscular body under their thick coat of curly fur.

So we shouldn't make the mistake of thinking this is a rug-like breed that won't need long walks or exercise, since this breed in particular needs to burn off energy to feel happy.

Puppies don't need long walks, though, since they're still developing, but we should take them out for a walk daily once they've had their mandatory vaccinations, so they can play with other dogs.

The best way for a puppy to burn off excess energy and exercise is precisely by letting them play with other dogs or puppies. On top of that, they'll socialise, avoiding behavioural problems in future. Let's go step by step through what else a water dog puppy needs to feel happy.

During their first year of life this breed will develop their athletic body, so it's necessary to feed them a special kibble for medium-breed puppies containing high-quality protein.

Try to look for kibbles with a high percentage of hydrolysed meat and little grain, ideally with rice as the only grain, since it's ideal for its slow energy release.

This isn't a breed with major veterinary needs; even so, they'll need every mandatory vaccination to enjoy good health. What's more, since this breed tends to develop dysplasia in adulthood, it would be great to apply chondroprotectant treatments often.

We need to take special care with their coat: being long and curly, it needs brushing daily with a brush specific to this type of coat. They'll also need protecting against parasites.

The best option for this breed, given their thick coat, is using chewable flea and tick preventatives (your vet will provide them).

Water dog puppies are very prone to diving headfirst into any puddle, river, lake or beach they find… because they simply love water. If it's cold, remember to dry them thoroughly to stop them catching a cold (kennel cough).

Beyond that, they'll just need plenty of love and affection, since this is an extremely affectionate breed that gets on brilliantly with children and adults alike. They're very much a family dog — don't make the mistake of leaving them outside the house; they need constant human contact.

Important: if you have a pool at home, remember to add an easy way out for the dogs, since they'll surely try to take a dip often.
