What Services Does Pet Insurance Cover?

More and more people are deciding to insure their pets, so vet bills and other expenses are covered in case of an accident. This is a smart way to protect our beloved four-legged friends against possible unexpected costs.

Let's look at some real coverage examples, like the ones we can find in a pet insurance policy for domestic animals from one of the leading insurance companies in Spain.

Being Hit by a Vehicle or Traffic Accidents

If our pet is the victim of a hit-and-run, or if it's traveling with us in a motor vehicle and we're in an accident, the domestic animal insurance from Pelayo does cover the vet bills resulting from such accidents (up to the annual maximum agreed in the policy — this applies across every insurance company).

It doesn't matter who's at fault in the accident — our dog or cat will be able to get the veterinary care they need to recover from their injuries.

Fights With Other Animals

Our dog might be very well-trained and super affectionate, social, and playful, but... what happens if another dog attacks it? Or if we're walking in the countryside and it's attacked by another animal?

These are examples of situations where our dog would need veterinary care, and they're also included in Pelayo's pet insurance. Although they might seem like exceptional cases, a fight between dogs is one of the most common reasons a dog might need medical attention.

Ingesting Foreign Objects

We all know what dogs are like — chewing on sticks, gnawing on anything that looks like a toy to them... even any bone they find while out on a walk.

These are situations that can cause tracheal collapse or require veterinary care to prevent more serious complications. This is another example that would be covered under the policy mentioned above.

Remember that as harmless as it might seem for our dog to swallow an object (thinking it'll just pass through...), it'll actually need veterinary attention, since it could get stuck in its throat or digestive tract.

Other Interesting Coverage

We always think about accident-related expenses, but there are many other important situations also covered by this policy, such as:

  • Death or necessary euthanasia resulting from an accident
  • Legal defense and civil liability
  • Court bonds
  • Legal costs
  • Insurance for dogs classified as dangerous breeds

What Is the Annual Veterinary Maximum?

Every insurer sets a maximum annual expense per insured pet, meaning our pet's veterinary expenses will be covered up to that maximum, as long as those expenses are for accidents covered under the veterinary policy. The same applies to legal costs, civil liability, and so on.

How Do I Know What's Covered and What's Not?

Before signing up for a policy, you should carefully read the general terms and conditions to understand which coverages are included in the pet insurance and which are excluded. As well as the annual veterinary maximums, legal maximums, and so on.
