Why Do Dogs Sniff the Crotch?

Although for humans this can be an uncomfortable, embarrassing behavior, capable of putting us in an awkward spot, for dogs it's such a normal, social thing that they'll do it again and again. Dogs sniff people's crotch or rear end to gather information about them.

A dog's most developed sense is its smell, which is more than ten thousand times stronger than a human's. When two dogs greet each other, they usually sniff each other's rear end and genitals, gathering a lot of important information this way.

The other dog's age, sex, whether it's in heat, whether it's recently given birth, whether it's sick... there's so much information they can gather just by smelling the pheromones concentrated in the genitals that they try to do the same with humans.

Dogs have thousands of these glands spread across their body, but especially concentrated around their genitals and rear end. This type of gland releases a substance we know as pheromones.

Pheromones carry a very distinctive scent depending on countless factors — a dog can even tell if another dog is in a good mood just from the smell of its pheromones. The same way it can tell its age, sex, typical diet, whether it's healthy, and so on.

Dogs don't talk, so their main form of communication is body language and smell. You've surely seen many times how your dog pees on a tree or corner where another dog has already peed, leaving its own scent so the other dog knows it's been there.

It's simply another form of communication that humans don't use, but that's very widespread in the animal world. Mainly in mammals with a highly developed sense of smell, like our dogs.

How to Act If a Dog Sniffs Our Private Parts

If a dog sniffs another person's crotch or even their rear end, we need to understand two basic things: first, that person probably finds the dog's behavior uncomfortable, and second, that this is a completely natural behavior for the dog, which we shouldn't punish.

The dog will sniff a person's crotch because they may have recently had sex, be menstruating, given birth, be sick, or simply because it's curious and wants information about that person.

That said, the situation can be very uncomfortable for the person involved, so we should simply pull our dog away and ask it to sit. But without scolding it, since it's really not doing anything wrong. We'll apologize to the other person and move along.

Humans concentrate a lot of pheromones in our private parts in the cases mentioned above, so it's no surprise a dog would feel drawn to those smells. It's a completely normal behavior within the animal kingdom.
