Chicken and Rice for Dogs

One of the most widely used natural recipes for treating sick dogs is chicken and rice with carrot, which is very simple to prepare, very cheap and both very wholesome and very effective. It is a recipe we can make at home in under an hour, and for most of that time we can be getting on with other things while it cooks.

Chicken and rice is ideal for dogs with diarrhoea or digestive problems: it is very gentle and digestible as well as nourishing. How much we give our dog depends on their size, so we will leave you a practical example so you can learn how much chicken and rice to give yours.

Here at SoyUnPerro.com we are going to explain step by step how to prepare this simple recipe, which will last several days if we keep it in the fridge and which our dog is going to love.

How to Make Chicken and Rice for Dogs

The recipe is as simple as it is practical: all we need is a pot and the necessary ingredients, and it is worth pointing out that feeding this way is far cheaper than any dog kibble of acceptable quality.

chicken and rice ingredients

Ingredients needed to make chicken and rice for dogs:

  • Three chicken thighs
  • Half a carrot
  • Three and a half glasses of rice
  • Ten and a half glasses of water

To make this simple recipe, the first thing to do is take the skin off the chicken: chicken skin is pure fat and is not good for dogs, since it is excessive. Once we have removed the skin from the thighs, we will use a knife to try to trim away any build-up of fat we come across (the fat is white and gathers in very specific spots).

With the chicken skinned, we wash the carrot and, leaving the skin on, chop it into very small pieces. A grater can be a great help here. We add the water to the pot along with the chopped carrot and the chicken.

Once the water starts to boil, we add the three and a half glasses of rice and leave it boiling for a couple of minutes. Then we turn the heat down so that it cooks very slowly, stirring now and then to stop it sticking.

Once the rice has absorbed all the water, we turn off the heat and leave everything to rest until it cools. Cooking usually takes between twenty and thirty minutes, though it depends a great deal on the type of hob or heat we are using.

When everything is completely cool, we take out the chicken thighs and remove the bones. We must never give our dog cooked chicken bones — they are very dangerous. We chop up the thigh meat and add it to the rice and carrot, mixing everything together thoroughly. The cooked bones should go in the bin.

How Much Chicken and Rice Should I Give My Dog?

It all depends on the size of your dog. In the photo you can see, where we have served up chicken and rice with carrot, that is the amount one of our thirty-five-kilo dogs eats three times a day. In other words, our dog has that amount in the morning, again at midday and once more at night.

If your dog weighs fifteen kilos, give them half of what you see; if they weigh seven kilos, give them just a quarter of what is in the photo. The amount is a rough guide — some dogs are a little on the plump side and need less, others are very thin and this amount, or a little more, is enough.

What Benefits Do Chicken, Rice and Carrot Have for Dogs?

This is an excellent recipe for feeding dogs who are unwell, being very low in fat and sodium as well as one hundred per cent natural. It is highly digestible and includes a good amount of carbohydrate that is very healthy for dogs. Let's not forget that rice is the best grain a dog can eat.

This chicken and rice with carrot recipe is particularly recommended for:

Obviously, this all assumes our dog is not allergic to any of the ingredients we use — common sense has to apply. This recipe is not designed to work as a complete, balanced diet, so we should use it for a month at most.

If we want to use it for longer, we will need to add some supplement containing the vitamins and minerals it lacks, as Nutribound for dogs can do. Adding an Ultralevura tablet too (available from pharmacies) will significantly improve our dog's gut flora.

Natural, cooked chicken is highly digestible and an excellent source of protein for our dog. Rice is the best grain a dog can have, a source of carbohydrate that will also act as an astringent if our dog has diarrhoea. The carrot will give our dog fibre and beta-carotene (provitamin A); if we notice the stools are soft we should cut down the amount of carrot, and if they are too hard we should increase it.
