A Dog's Short-Term Memory

Let's say you get home and your dog has destroyed the sofa out of boredom — it'll come greet you like it always does, because it's living in the moment, the present. It doesn't remember that moments ago it was tearing something apart...

If you scold it, it might stop doing it, or it might not. Either way, it'll still come greet you when you get home. Dogs can remember specific facts, like that destroying things is bad, but they don't remember hiding after doing it — instead, they come out to welcome you.

This might sound a bit complex, but it's actually quite simple. We can teach them things through repetitive exercises, but they can't remember what they did ten minutes ago.

Memory Linked to Images, Smells, and Sounds

Known as long-term memory, a dog is able to link a person's image to something positive, like petting, playing, or food. So when the dog sees that person, whether now or in ten years, it'll feel the same way.

Its incredible sense of smell lets it associate scents with feelings or moments, so the smell of our cologne can make it feel excited and very happy, knowing we're arriving home even before it's seen us.

The same goes for sounds — if our dog enjoys walking in the woods because there's no car noise, just nature and other animals, it doesn't matter which woods you take it to; as long as it hears those sounds, it'll feel comfortable.

How Long Can They Remember a Human?

It doesn't matter if it's us, a family member, or just a friend who's stopped by the house a few times. Our dog will remember them forever — surprised?

Its memory is so complex, yet so good, that it won't just remember the person's image — it'll also remember their smell and the sound of their voice, their tone. That's why, even if it just hears or smells them, it'll be able to identify them without any trouble, no matter how much time has passed.
