Benefits of Walking Your Dog

Everyone who's been fortunate enough to share many years of their life with their dogs, and those of us still sharing years with them, know how important it is to walk with our dog.

There are many benefits both our dog and we'll get from a daily walking routine. For those who've had a dog for a short time, or for those who don't have one yet but are planning to, here are just some of the benefits of walking with your dog.

Why Is It Important to Walk Our Dog Daily?

It's common to take a dog out four or five times a day, mostly very short walks so it can relieve itself. But among all these outings, we should choose one time a day to take our dog on a longer walk. Generally, going for a walk of at least an hour is recommended.

There are many reasons to walk a dog daily, and all of them are highly beneficial, so let's go over them one by one and explain why each matters.

Walking Our Dog Helps It Release Energy

When we walk our dog, besides spending a pleasant time together, we're also exercising it, working every muscle and keeping it in shape. This not only helps it stay at a healthy weight — it also burns off some of its energy so it's calm and settled once back home.

Walking for about an hour a day will keep our dog's mental and physical health strong, giving it exercise and fresh air — what more could you ask for?

A Dog's Walk Is the Foundation of Socialization

We should remember that socializing a dog is the most important part of its training. We need to let the dog interact with its surroundings, get to know nearby parks, smell its neighbors, interact with other dogs, get used to local noises, and so on.

A socialized dog is a calm, pleasant, respectful dog toward other dogs and people. A poorly socialized or unsocialized dog is the exact opposite.

Walking With Our Dog Will Build a Bond

Every dog builds a special bond with its humans, a bond that needs to be reinforced by doing things together, like walking and playing. Our dog will build a much closer bond with us if we take it out for a walk daily — it'll know we're the closest part of its pack.

Walking a Dog Daily Is Also Beneficial for Us

More and more doctors recommend adopting a dog or becoming a foster home, since dogs only bring positive things. Walking with our dog forces us to move too, keeping us from a sedentary lifestyle — so it exercises us too and is highly beneficial for our health.

It also helps us connect with our neighbors — it's very common to get to know every dog owner in the neighborhood, greet each other, share stories about our dogs, and so on.

It'll clear our mind — human beings are, in a way, stressed and weighed down by society... we need to work, study, or both, take on family responsibilities, deal with bills, and so on. Walking with a dog is the perfect excuse to disconnect from it all and spend a peaceful moment, release stress, and get some fresh air. Even on bad weather days, it's still worth walking our dog.

What Do I Need to Walk a Dog?

There's not much to say, but it never hurts to remember some practical tips before heading out for a walk:

  • Go for a walk when the temperature is pleasant — remember, too much sun can seriously harm a dog if it suffers heatstroke. Use common sense and never walk during the hottest hours of the day.
  • Always carry bags to pick up its waste — it's completely normal for our dog to take the chance to pee and poop, so we need to come prepared.
  • Try to keep a consistent schedule — dogs are very smart and know exactly what time it is even without a clock. If you get them used to a long walk every morning or every evening, they'll know exactly when it's walk time and when it's just a quick bathroom break.
  • Leave your problems at home — our dogs can sense if we're nervous, upset, or in a rush. This can spoil the walk, and that's not fair — they've been waiting all day for this moment, so enjoy it with them and save your problems for another time.
  • Bring fresh water if needed — in some places, there are no fountains, rivers, or reservoirs where dogs can drink fresh water during walks. That's why it's important to bring along, in a backpack, fanny pack, or bag, a bottle of fresh water for our dog.
