What Are the Best Dog Insurance Policies in Spain? January 2026

The peace of mind and security that come from taking out the best veterinary insurance for your dog are simply priceless. Knowing that if something happens to them they'll have veterinary coverage, regardless of our situation at that moment, will let us sleep much easier.

We all know that so-called "domestic animals," like cats or dogs, are much more than that to us — they're part of our family, and so we'll always want the best for them. So without further ado, let's look at the best options for insuring our dog.

Important things to consider in a dog insurance policy

You've probably heard that we should read the fine print carefully before taking out any insurance — let us tell you, that's absolutely worth doing. In the general terms of each insurance company we'll find different conditions, but the most important ones for our dog are:

Waiting period

This is the time that passes from when we take out the policy until it becomes effective — in other words, the time between having veterinary insurance and actually being able to use it. Insurers generally set one waiting period for illness, another for accidents, and another for surgical procedures.

Annual maximum

This is the amount of money the insurer will reimburse us each year, based on the veterinary expenses it covers and the cost of our dog's veterinary bills due to illness, accident, or death.

Lifetime coverage

You might be surprised to learn that most insurers don't offer lifetime coverage. This means that once your dog gets older, they won't want to insure it anymore. Fortunately, there are exceptions that do offer this option.

Age at sign-up

Many insurers don't want to insure older dogs, since older dogs tend to need more veterinary care. That's why they usually set an age limit for taking out the policy.

Choice of vet

This is another key point to weigh, since being able to choose whichever veterinary clinic you want isn't something many insurers allow. Check this carefully before signing up.

Clarity of coverage

If you visit an insurer's website and it doesn't clearly lay out its coverage, be wary. Companies that clearly show everything they cover are the most trustworthy, since they lay it all out plainly, with no catches or fine print.

Congenital and hereditary conditions

These are conditions that certain breeds suffer from or inherit from their parents, such as elbow or hip dysplasia. Many insurers don't cover these — you should pay close attention.

List of the best dog insurance policies in Spain in 2025

Petplan

Petplan

This is a pet insurance company headquartered in Seville and backed by the giant Telefónica Seguros y Reaseguros S.A.U., so we're dealing with a large, well-backed insurer.

We can say this is one of the best veterinary insurance policies for dogs available today, since the coverage it offers is excellent — although it does come with a €45 co-pay (deductible) that isn't per visit (it's paid once per claim).

Among its strong points, it stands out for reimbursing 100% of veterinary expenses, death or theft compensation, cremation/disposal costs (in case of illness or accident), help finding our dog if lost or stolen, medication (treatment) coverage, and it doesn't raise the price based on claims history.

The drawbacks of this Petplan health policy that we can find are the mandatory €45 co-pay per claim; other than that, it's an excellent option.

PETPLAN Annual maximum €3,100 Reimbursement percentage 100% Mandatory co-pay €45 Free choice of vet YES

In our opinion, despite the co-pay, this is an excellent option for covering our dog's veterinary needs. You can get a quote for your dog from Petplan's official website, and if you take out a policy with them you can get a €30 refund by entering the code SOYUNPERRO in the "remarks" field.

SanteVet

SantéVet

This company is headquartered in Barcelona and is backed by VETASSUR SARL, as part of the La Compagnie des Animaux group. So we can feel completely confident about its veterinary policies.

SantéVet offers another of the best veterinary insurance policies in Spain, with a health plan for dogs that reimburses up to 90% of veterinary expenses for illness or accident, processed within 48 hours.

It offers a policy with lifetime coverage. So even as our dog gets older, we can keep the policy active. SantéVet's dog insurance policies let us freely choose which veterinary clinic to visit, and besides reimbursing a percentage of veterinary costs, it also covers medication, vaccines, parasite prevention, microchipping, and even includes one dental cleaning per year.

Note that this is a policy with a deductible, so an amount will be deducted from our first claim each year, regardless of the plan type. When taking out a SantéVet health policy, we can choose between three options: Light, Comfort, and Premium.

Light

The Light policy has a €20 deductible (only on the first claim each year), 50% reimbursement of veterinary expenses from illness or accident, and an annual maximum of €1,100.

Comfort

The Comfort policy has a €40 deductible on the first claim each year and 70% reimbursement of veterinary expenses, with an annual maximum of €1,500.

Premium

SantéVet's Premium plan has a €100 deductible on the first claim each year, 90% reimbursement of veterinary expenses, and an annual maximum of €2,200.

You can run a quote to see prices on SantéVet's website.

caser

Caser

This insurer, headquartered in Madrid, belongs to the Helvetia Group, making it a fully trustworthy insurer with strong backing. At Caser we can find two options for taking out a health policy for our dog: WeCAN Check and WeCAN Live.

The difference between these plans lies in their coverage and price — obviously the more expensive plan offers greater coverage. Let's look at what they are.

WeCAN Check

With this policy we'll have access to check-ups, consultations, and emergencies at Caser's partner veterinary centers. It includes the rabies vaccine (annually) completely free of charge. And if your pet needs any treatment, surgery, or diagnostic test, you'll get up to a 40% discount (at their partner centers).

WeCAN Live

With this somewhat cheaper plan, Caser will reimburse 100% of veterinary bills as long as they exceed €800, with no maximum reimbursement limit. Also, unlike WeCAN Check, here you do get free choice of vet.

Pros and Cons of Caser

You can find affordable dog insurance in the WeCAN Live option, though you'll have to pay any bill under €800 yourself. So we could say this is insurance for serious problems (with high veterinary costs).

In the pricier option, WeCAN Check, surgeries or tests aren't included, and you can't freely choose your vet either.

So, in our view, this insurer offers the chance to take out civil liability and veterinary coverage, focused only on covering certain scenarios, without offering broad coverage. However, if we only want insurance for very serious problems (with high veterinary costs), as often happens with hunting dogs for example, WeCAN Live can be an excellent choice. You can get a quote for your policy on Caser's official website.

mascotsegur

Mascotsegur (Cofidis)

This health insurance company for dogs and cats is headquartered in Barcelona and is backed by the ACM España and Targobank group, making it, like the previous options, a very well-backed company.

At Mascotsegur we can find two options for taking out a veterinary policy for our dog: Clinimascota and Completmascota. Each comes with different prices and, obviously, different coverage.

Clinimascota

This plan has an annual maximum of €2,000 and offers 80% reimbursement of veterinary expenses from surgery, prosthetics, and pharmacy costs related to surgery. It also covers 80% of euthanasia costs and up to €15 for deworming.

Completmascota

Mascotsegur's Completmascota veterinary insurance offers an annual maximum of €3,000 with 80% reimbursement of veterinary expenses from surgery and medication, just like Clinimascota.

However, this plan also reimburses 80% of the cost of vet consultations (up to €40 per visit), emergency services (up to €85 per visit), and chemotherapy (oncology). In other words, it's a more comprehensive policy than the previous one, which is why its price is also somewhat higher.

Another positive point of Mascotsegur is free choice of veterinary clinic, so you can go to whichever clinic you want.

mapfre

Mapfre

Mapfre is headquartered in Madrid and is a highly renowned insurance company in Spain, offering home and auto insurance among others, besides pet insurance. It's a large company that doesn't need backing from other firms, since it's a major company in its own right.

It offers different options for insuring our dog, letting us choose between a policy that includes accident coverage, or one that covers both accidents and illness.

Mapfre's dog life insurance policies pay compensation for the animal's value in case of death (the value declared when taking out the policy). Its most complete policy includes coverage for consultation costs, diagnostic tests, lab work, surgery, hospitalization, and at-home veterinary care expenses.

At Mapfre's partner veterinary clinics we won't have to pay anything, and if we go to a non-partner clinic we can get an 80% reimbursement of covered expenses. You can run a quote on Mapfre's official website.

aon

AON

Aon Iberia Correduría de Seguros y Reaseguros S.A.U. is headquartered in Madrid and is backed by the AON Group, a major multinational offering services worldwide. In other words, it's just as well-backed as the previous options.

We can choose between three types of veterinary insurance, each more comprehensive and obviously pricier than the last. We're referring to AON's Accident insurance, Recommended veterinary insurance, and Complete insurance.

AON Accident

This dog health policy option includes coverage of up to €1,000 per accident with no limit on the number of accidents per year. It also covers theft, loss, and death. Although you can take it out for any type of dog, given its features it's a good option as insurance for hunting dogs.

AON Recommended

AON's Recommended policy includes everything in the Accident policy and also adds coverage for veterinary expenses from illness, with an annual maximum of €1,000.

AON Complete

AON's Complete policy includes everything in the Recommended policy and also includes civil liability coverage of up to €200,000.

AON's veterinary insurance offers reimbursement of up to 80% at any veterinary clinic (free choice) and up to 100% at partner veterinary clinics. They're valid in Spain and the European Union. You can calculate your premium on AON's official website.

asisa

Asisa

We all know Asisa for its private health insurance policies for people, but what you might not know is that they also offer pet insurance. This major company is headquartered in Madrid and needs no backing, since ASISA, Asistencia Sanitaria Interprovincial de Seguros S.A.U., is itself a major company.

Asisa offers a different kind of veterinary assistance option than the other companies mentioned, since it won't reimburse veterinary expenses or anything similar. What Asisa's policy offers is discounts on veterinary fees at its partner clinics, with average discounts of 40% depending on the type of coverage.

What's more, Asisa has no waiting period at all — its policy is valid from the moment it's taken out. Asisa's dog health policy fully covers the rabies vaccine, the combination vaccine, and the trivalent vaccine, plus check-ups and emergency consultations. You can find more information on Asisa's official website.

santa lucia

Santa Lucía

This is another major insurance and reinsurance company headquartered in Madrid, which needs no backing from bigger companies since it's already a major company itself. So its policies are fully trustworthy.

Santa Lucía offers an expandable veterinary insurance policy for dogs, which in its basic form covers accidents, theft, or loss, and in its extended version also covers certain veterinary expenses.

In the event of death, the insurer will pay out the full insured amount (which varies depending on how the policy was set up). With up to 50% of the insured amount for accident-related expenses in the event of death, and also up to 50% for veterinary expenses from an accident without death. Coverage of up to €180 if euthanasia of the animal becomes necessary.

Santa Lucía also offers the option to take out civil liability insurance. You can run a quote on Santa Lucía's website.

verti

Verti

Verti is an insurance company headquartered in Madrid offering different types of insurance, including veterinary insurance for dogs. For anyone who doesn't know, Verti is, so to speak, Mapfre's budget brand. So it's backed by a giant of the insurance world.

Verti offers the option to take out two different veterinary insurance policies, in addition to the civil liability insurance they also offer. These are the M veterinary policy and the comprehensive L veterinary policy for dogs.

Policy M

With this Verti veterinary insurance option, we'll have coverage for veterinary care from accidents, which includes surgery and hospitalization (as well as at-home veterinary care).

Comprehensive Policy L

This option includes everything in Policy M and also gives us coverage for veterinary care from illness, including surgery, hospitalization, and at-home care.

The insured premium chosen when taking out the policy will be the maximum payable by the insurer on an annual basis, so the price of the policy will obviously vary depending on the premium we choose to insure. You can run a quote on Verti's official website.

How much does veterinary insurance cost?

We come to another of the most important points when getting insurance. Each policy has different coverage and, therefore, a different price.

  • Is the best veterinary insurance for dogs the most expensive one? No.
  • Is the cheapest veterinary insurance the one with the worst coverage? No.
  • Is the best insurance for my dog the best for every dog? No.
  • What should we look for in a good veterinary insurance policy? The best value for money.

For example, if I have a hunting dog and only want insurance to cover possible accidents while we're out hunting, I don't need a policy with broad illness coverage, so a more basic, cheaper policy will give me the coverage I actually need.

Another example: if I have a dog that lives with me and isn't a hunting dog, but we go for walks together and even take the occasional hike, a policy covering both illness and accidents is our best option.

That's why we should always look for the best value for money in a veterinary insurance policy — one that covers what we actually need, or rather, what our dog needs.

Price of the best veterinary insurance for illness and accidents

In our opinion, and given the features of the leading pet insurers, there are two options that can claim to be the best veterinary insurance for dogs. These are Petplan and SantéVet.

We ran a comparison between the two options we consider the most complete and the best value for money. This comparison was carried out on their websites as of this article's publication date, using the example of a one-year-old male German Shepherd weighing 25 kilos.

PETPLAN SANTÉVET €383 €324.12*

*SantéVet has three plan options, so we selected the middle one (Comfort).

Price of the best veterinary insurance for accidents

If we only want insurance that covers accidents, things change a bit here, since we don't need illness coverage.

Based on the features and coverage of the insurers described, our top options are: Caser WeCAN Live and Verti Policy M. We ran a comparison using a one-year-old male German Shepherd.

Caser WeCAN Live Verti Policy M €118.97 €47.95

Conclusion

Spain has 9.3 million registered dogs, meaning one in every two Spanish households has a dog. There are obviously many unregistered dogs, so this number is likely much higher. Having veterinary insurance isn't mandatory, but it's highly recommended.

Be sure to read each policy's terms carefully to weigh its conditions and exclusions, especially if your dog is a hunting dog, since many companies won't insure them.
